How to dress the family

Having a newborn, whether it's your first baby or your fifth, can be a stressful time. You have enough going on without worrying what everyone will wear for your first family portraits with the new addition. Don't stress, mama! I'm here to make it super simple for you.

Keep It Neutral

The best color palette for family newborn portraits is a classic neutral. Black, white/cream, gray, or khaki are the colors I recommend sticking to. Choose ONE of those. I know, I know. It's the only time you'll hear me recommend everyone wear the same color. Trust me, this is one time that it actually looks FABULOUS. Neutrals match every style of decor and will never go out of style. Plus, when paired with the right solid backdrop and studio lighting, it will take the vibe of your images up to the next level of high-end artwork.

Keep It Comfortable

No need to worry about trying to put together a complex or fancy outfit. A solid, comfy tee with jeans or a solid comfy knit dress are absolutely perfect! This goes for not just mom, but the entire crew. And what's really awesome? No running to ten different stores or spending a fortune trying to find coordinating outfits. Solid color tees are super easy to find and super cheap. You may even already have exactly what you need in your closet!

Don't Stress the Small Stuff

These family portraits will be shot mainly from the waist up, so no need to stress about wearing the right shoes (they'll never be seen). I also recommend avoiding lots of jewelry such as long necklaces, bracelets, or dangling earrings as these can hinder posing and also be distracting.

Focus on what matters

Your wardrobe is not the star of the show. We want to focus on your precious new baby and the growing love of your family. This is why I strongly recommend wearing solid neutral-colored tops for the whole family. Adding bolder colors (or a variety of colors), patterns, or other details will distract from the main focus of the image, as well as the emotional connection.
